The best men's skincare secret every man needs to know about

We live in a “selfie” culture, which means there is the potential for skin imperfections to be captured at high resolution. While most of us want to cultivate self-acceptance, very few of us can fully accept skin bumps, clogged pores, uneven skin tone and pimples. This is part of the reason that make up and skincare categories are seeing a surge in growth. For men. Yes, skincare and makeup is no longer just for the ladies.

Most of us assume women are more likely than men to feel pressure to look good. But, but research tells us that both genders associate appearance with success in their personal and professional lives.

So let’s keep it real and give men some simple skincare advice. There really isn't much difference between men and women when it comes to what are considered to be essential steps in a skin care routine. A man’s skin requires daily care too - exfoliate, cleanse, moisturize (treat) and protect. Men do have the added dimension of looking after their facial hair but we will cover best practice in beard care and shaving in a different blog.

Step 1- Exfoliate: Most men are really skeptical about the importance of exfoliation. I guess if they shave daily the lower part of their face is getting some exfoliation through that process.  Adding an effective exfoliant like BOA, non-invasive gentle exfoliant, can make a huge difference in the way their skin feels and looks. There are other exfoliants in the market that work as well but unfortunately, most skincare products marketed to men contain sensitizing and drying ingredients.

The exfoliation process also helps men with the issue of ingrown hairs, reduces those bumps and blotches and also helps with dry and flaky areas. It improves the texture and tone of their skin and clears out the clogged pores. It can even diminish the look of wrinkles.

Step 2- Cleanse: The next key step is to use a gentle cleanser to wash off the dead skin and impurities from the skin.

Step 3- Moisturize or treat: Use a moisturizer that doesn't contain menthols or skin aggravating fragrances. Definitely avoid products that contain denatured alcohol. Use a product that hydrates your skin and contains enough emollient. This is a step where if you have a specific skin issue, you can use a product that moisturizes as well as addresses the problem.

Step 4- Protect: The final step is to use effective sun protection. Most men think sunscreen means white stuff all over their face that they use during a sport activity. But this is a critical step and should be used daily as part of the skin care routine. Ideally, a product with an SPF of 30 is all you need but if you are not so keen on the heaviness of sunscreen products try something with non-mineral based sunscreen factors like Zinc or Titanium. Alternatively, an SPF 15 moisturizer can help you with the heaviness of the sunscreen but remember to reapply when you go out in the sun.

So there you have it. 4 simple skincare steps to keep your skin clean, clear and even-toned, regardless of gender.
